After a hiatus of months and months and months, I’m at book club RIGHT NOW!!!
I thought I’d share what that looks like.
This is what it looks like after I read a book:
This is what it looks like after I read a book for book club:
All those sticky notes are indicators of hilarious lines, answers to the discussion questions, reminders of things I want to bring up about the tone, the style, the brilliance of the work.
And yes, it is true: when I read for discussion I read harder, closer, and very often, a second time. The re-read (which is more like a re-flip-through) helps me get clearer in my mind the ways in which the author created the book.
I also look for questions that come up in my own mind. When I review books that remind me of others I like (or, in this case are explicitly based on), I’m faced with questions about the originals, like, How is the pacing of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice achieved? How would I characterize the tone of P&P? Are the parental Bennetts more truly the antagonists than Wickham, Collins, and de Burgh?
I love questions, I love reading good books, and this book continues to be exceptionally enjoyable!
What do you think?
