I think my studio recording this week was cosmically affected by goings-on in the Pacific Ocean. Sound is a “wave,” and the ocean has “waves,” and hurricanes make BIG, sometimes destructive waves. So many waves.

This week’s waves were hard-hitting, even while I enjoyed the challenge of them: High peaks of achievement, praise, and competency, alongside the troughs of mistakes, frustrations, and tech issues.

Tidal forces are encouraging me to take a hard look at what *could* go wrong, and prepare for the storm. I’m going with the flow, tacking along to get where I need to go, but it is time for redundancy in my system.

So, It is gear-time! All of the gear below was recommended in an online class I took that focused on recording audiobooks for ACX. (Luckily, I’ve been using the recommended mic for over 3 years, so no learning curve there. But something *may* have happened to my mic this week to cause an issue…I’m not sure. Time for a backup).

First, a new desk stand. Everything everywhere will tell you that audiobook narration should be done sitting. I believe this advice. However, live teachers and instructors don’t SIT in front of their classes. They stand, they walk, they write on the board, they move closer to hear questions, engage the students…Sitting is *very* hard for me.

Still, when I get the contract for the next 100+ hour Patrick Rothfuss audiobook, I will probably need to learn to sit, or I’ll never make it through. So I’m thinking BIG. New stand, so I can record sitting or standing.

And a duplicate mic.

And a set of wireless earbuds.
